It has been reported that plans to build a new 31-story skyscraper, known as ‘the Quill’, have been given the go-head by high court judge, Mr Justice Lindblom.
The 328ft high skyscraper will be located at the corner of Weston Street and St Thomas Street near London Bridge Station, SE1. It’s purpose is intended for student accommodation, however, opposition from locals and businesses have erupted.
Locals have suggested the linked-tower, which resembles a quill pen, will ruin the views of the Tower of London, whilst nearby businesses claim the new skyscraper will be ‘overbearing’ and could possibly jeopardise redevelopment plans in the SE1 area.
However, Mr Justice Lindblom has cleared the way for development, stating that Southwark Council have acted lawfully and there should be no reason why plans cannot go full steam ahead.
The skyscraper’s nick name ‘the Quill’ comes from its design which is based on a quill pen, inspired by the area’s links to William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens; two of the UK’s most celebrated writers.
News of the Quill’s go-ahead also comes at the same time as progress report on another London Skyscraper – The Shard – which is reported to be nearing its completion.
